    2016 & 2019

    two trips

Portugal is a small country, full of history, architecture and incredible food — and still one of the best-value destinations in Europe.

I explored it on two trips — Lisbon and the Algarve in 2016, then Porto, the Douro and the rest of the country in 2019 — and put them together into one 12-day road trip from Porto and the vineyards of the Douro all the way down to the beaches of the Algarve, with Sintra, Lisbon and Évora along the way.

    The itinerary

    Days 1–2 · 2 nights

    Porto

Arrive and head straight for the restaurants and bars on the riverfront. Next day, walk along the Douro, cross the Dom Luís I bridge and visit the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal and Liberdade Square.

    Day 3 · 1 night

    Braga & the Douro Valley

Pick up a rental car, visit the gardens of Braga, then drive 90 minutes to the Douro Valley for a wine tasting. We slept inside a giant wine barrel at Quinta da Pacheca — an unforgettable night.

    Day 4 · 1 night

    Nazaré & Sintra

Drive south for a swim at Nazaré, home of the biggest waves in the world, then spend the afternoon among the fairy-tale palaces of Sintra. Don’t miss Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of mainland Europe.

    Days 5–6 · 2 nights

    Lisbon

Day one: the Alfama district, Mercado da Ribeira, Bairro Alto and Praça do Comércio. Day two: Belém Tower, the Jerónimos Monastery and the view from the Cristo Rei sanctuary.

    Day 7

    Évora

On the way south, stop in Évora to see the Roman Temple and the cathedral, then continue to the Algarve.

    Days 8–11 · 4 nights

    The Algarve

Four days of golden cliffs and coves: Praia da Marinha, Praia dos Três Irmãos, Praia do Camilo and the famous Benagil cave. Buy a Bola de Berlim from the beach sellers — about €1.

    Day 12

    Back to Lisbon & home

A last morning on the beach before driving back to Lisbon airport.

    When to go

    Before you go

My top 3 tips for Portugal

    01

Rent a car at the airport

The best and cheapest way to travel; trains and buses work too.

    02

    Keep to the right lane

On motorways, driving in the middle lane can get you a fine.

    03

    Travel off-season

Avoid July and August for better prices, fewer crowds and still lovely weather.

    What to eat

    Don’t leave without trying

    Pastel de nata

Warm custard tarts — eat them fresh with cinnamon.

    Port wine

Taste it in the cellars of Porto and the quintas of the Douro.

    Bola de Berlim

The Algarve beach treat, sold by vendors on the sand.

    Tailor-made

Want this trip, made for you?

I’ll design your Portugal road trip — quintas in the Douro, boutique hotels in Lisbon and the best beaches of the Algarve.

Israel & Jordan in 10 days: Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Petra & Wadi Rum

    I travelled

    October 2018

In October 2018 we spent 10 days between Cyprus, Israel and Jordan: three lazy beach days, then the energy of Tel Aviv, the spiritual heart of Jerusalem and, to finish, the rose-red city of Petra and the Mars-like desert of Wadi Rum.

This is the route we followed, where we stayed and ate, and how to see Petra and Wadi Rum in two days from Jerusalem.

    The itinerary

    Days 1–3 · stopover

    Ayia Napa, Cyprus

Three days of pure relaxation on the beaches of eastern Cyprus before flying on to Israel.

    Days 4–5 · 2 nights

    Tel Aviv & Jaffa

Tel Aviv has 16 beaches — Frishman, Banana and Metsitsim are great places to start. Walk 35 minutes along the seafront to the old city of Jaffa, then explore the pretty streets of Neve Tzedek.

Don’t miss: Hummus Abu Hassan in Jaffa — the best hummus of our lives.

    Days 6–8 · 3 nights

    Jerusalem

A 45-minute train ride from Tel Aviv. Join a walking tour of the Old City: the Western Wall, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Temple Mount. In the evening, head to the bars and cafés of Nachalat Shiva.

Where I stayed: The Post Hostel — brand new, spotless, great vibe and breakfast.

Best view: the Notre Dame rooftop, with cheese and wine over the Old City.

    Day trip from Jerusalem

    The Dead Sea & Masada

About an hour from Jerusalem. Float in the Dead Sea and cover yourself in its famous mud — a free beauty treatment that’s sold in bottles all over the world — then tour the ancient fortress of Masada.

    Days 9–10 · 1 night

    Petra & Wadi Rum, Jordan

We joined a two-day tour from Jerusalem: a 3am pickup, a drive across the Negev Desert and over the border at Eilat, a full day in Petra and a night in a Bedouin camp in Wadi Rum. Sunset, sunrise, a jeep safari with a local guide — then back through Eilat for a last swim.

    Petra step by step

    Don’t stop at the Treasury

About 80% of visitors turn back after the first big sight. Keep going — Petra is four times the size of Manhattan, and the best parts are further in.

    1

    The Siq

The narrow canyon entrance, its smooth rock walls carved by the Nabataeans.

    2

    The Treasury

Petra’s most magnificent façade — and the set of Indiana Jones.

    3

    The Theatre

A few hundred metres on — it shows how big and lively the city once was.

    4

    The Monastery

The farthest site, up more than 800 steps through the hills. Worth every one.

Wadi Rum, the Valley of the Moon

60 km east of Aqaba, the scenery really looks like Mars — it’s where The Martian was filmed. Sleep in a Bedouin camp, watch the sunset and sunrise over the dunes and explore by jeep with a local guide. If you can, stay two nights.

    When to go

The best time to visit Israel & Jordan

Israel is great from May to October. Jordan is best in spring and autumn — July and August are very hot in Petra and the desert. For both together, aim for April–June or September–November.

    Before you go

    My top 3 tips

    01

    Take the train

Tel Aviv to Jerusalem is just 45 minutes by train — cheap and very well connected.

    02

    Dress for the holy sites

Cover legs and shoulders for the Temple Mount and churches — especially women.

    03

    Give Petra two days

We only had one. Bring lots of water, sunglasses and sun protection — there’s little shade.

    Where to eat

3 food stops you have to make

    Hummus Abu Hassan, Jaffa

The best hummus of our lives. Go early — it’s worth the queue.

    Machane Yehuda Market

Jerusalem’s market, with more than 250 stalls to graze through.

    Ishtabach

Kurdish cooking near the market — a dinner we still talk about.

    Tailor-made

Want this trip, made for you?

Mexican food is famous all over the world, but until you eat it in Mexico you don’t really know what Mexican food is. The same goes for the Yucatán: postcards don’t do it justice.

We based ourselves in Playa del Carmen for 10 days and explored the peninsula with a rental car — beaches and cenotes in the morning, Mayan ruins and colonial towns in the afternoon, tacos on the beach at night.

The perfect base: lively, full of restaurants and bars, and within easy driving of everything. We stayed in a hotel with a rooftop pool — ideal after a long day out.

    Day trip · 1 hour

    Tulum & Cobá

Tulum is a magical little hippie town, best explored by bicycle, with Mayan ruins right above the beach. Nearby, climb the pyramid at Cobá for a view over the jungle canopy.

    Day trip · morning

    Cenotes

The Yucatán is dotted with cenotes, natural sinkholes of crystal-clear water. Go early to beat the crowds at Cenote Azul, and don’t miss Cenote Ik Kil — a 26-metre drop into the most spectacular cenote we saw.

Day trip · 2 hours from Tulum

    Bacalar Lagoon

The ‘lagoon of seven colours’ is one of the most stunning places in Mexico. Stay a night in a hotel with waterfront rooms if you can.

    Day trip · 2 hours

    Chichén Itzá & Valladolid

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The site is huge, so hire a guide. Then stop in colonial Valladolid and walk the colourful Calzada de los Frailes.

    Day trip · ferry

    Holbox Island

A paradise island with no cars — just golf carts and bicycles. Take the 30-minute boat from Chiquilá and slow right down.

    Day trip

    Río Lagartos & Mérida

Thousands of pink flamingos gather at Río Lagartos from March to June. Finish in Mérida, the elegant colonial capital, around the Plaza Grande.

    Beyond the Yucatán

    More of Mexico

    Teotihuacan

Climb the Pyramid of the Sun, an easy day trip from Mexico City.

    Agua Azul, Chiapas

Turquoise cascades deep in the jungle of Chiapas.

    Isla Mujeres

An easy day trip by ferry from Cancún.

    When to go

The best time to visit the Yucatán

December to April is the best time: sunny, dry and not too hot. February and March can bring seaweed to some beaches. June to October is the rainy and hurricane season.

My top 3 tips for Mexico

    01

Hire a car at the airport

It gives you total freedom, and the roads are well maintained. In Tulum, switch to a bicycle.

    02

    Go to the cenotes early

Arrive first thing to have them almost to yourself — and bring water shoes for the rocks.

    03

Take a guide at Chichén Itzá

The site is huge and full of stories you’d miss on your own.

    What to eat

    Eat like a local

    Tacos on the beach

Simple, fresh and the best lunch after a swim.

    Huevos rancheros

Breakfast of champions, with a fresh grapefruit juice.

    Ceviche tostadas

Fresh fish ceviche — and try the octopus too.
