Hungary it’s home of one of the most beautiful capital cities in Europe, Budapest. It was created in 1873 by the merger of three cities: Buda, Óbuda and Pest. The Hungarian capital attracts tourists with its exciting sights, delicious dishes and relaxing thermal waters. This country may lack of sea access, but it has its own brand of water wealth, it’s the land of thermal spas. There are more than 1,300 in all the country, with 123 in Budapest alone – which brings infinite opportunities for tourists to visit this country all year round.
Budapest is one of the most photogenic cities in Europe, when the sun is setting over the Danube, you can photograph the city during its golden hour right from the Pest side, by the river bank. It’s a lively city with many attractions for all ages, for example for young tourists the ruin pubs like Szimpla kert, Doboz and Csendes Vintage are fun and a cool environment, for the not so young anymore tourists the vast choice of thermal spas give an unforgettable and unique experience.
The view of the city is fantastic from several points, the lights of the town from Danube river is really breath-taking during the night, in my opinion one of the most photographed sights in the city especially at night is the Széchenyi Chain Bridge.
We spent 4 amazing days in Easter 2019 wondering around Budapest, I think was one of the hottest Easter weekend in the last decade, we had to buy sun cream! we left our heart in Budapest, it’s one of the greatest gems on the Danube.
Buda extends to the hills on the west bank of the Danube and Pest on the left bank of the river. In Buda, the 235 m high of Gellért Hill offers a remarkable view of the whole city. There are 7 bridges and 2 railway bridges In Budapest, except for one bridge (Elisabeth Bridge), all bridges were destroyed during the Second World War and then were restored to the original style. If you’re standing on Gellért Hill it’s clear to see the geographical difference with Buda’s hills and Pest’s flat terrain.
Buda – Definitely the classier and more residential side of the city, Buda is known for being a bit quieter and the place to go for a sightseeing experience. It’s home of fantastic sights such as the beautiful Fisherman’s Bastion, the Buda Castle and Matthias Church. In this part of the city you will find gorgeous thermal spas like the Gellért and Rudas Baths (there is a fantastic view of the river). On top of Gellert Hill, you have The Citadel (a 19th century fortification that now has been turned into a lookout tower) will give you one of the most stunning views over the Danube and the elegant Liberty Statue.
The Fisherman’s Bastion is a really impressive and wonderful monument, you can spend easily an half day taking pictures and enjoying the view of the river and the Parliament. If you visit all the castles, landmarks and baths, you will certainly occupy a lot of your time in the beauty of Buda side.
Pest – Known for being where all of the action happens, the place where the tourist hang out and have fun. But there is much more, you have the amazing Parliament building, such a stunning, iconic and beautiful landmark. We did not take a tour of the building we walked all around it, the surroundings are amazing, make sure to see it especially during the night time, the lights are spectacular.
In this side of the city you have the biggest city park of Budapest, Városliget where you have plenty of things to do, the famous Széchenyi Baths, Budapest Zoo, Vajdahunyad Castle and Heroes’ Square. The Széchenyi Baths was quite busy even if we went at around 10am, was Easter so we can’t complain.
We spent a full day in this park, in the morning we enjoyed the thermal bath, we had lunch in a kiosk with a huge Langos (you need to try at least once) and in the afternoon we visited the rest of the park.
Still in Pest side, not far from the Liberty Bridge, you can have a snack or lunch in the Central Market Hall, where you can find many local dishes. Pest is where you go to eat, drink after you’ve spent the day discovering the city, we tried Dobrumba and Mazel Tov restaurants, delicious food.
It’s really easy to get around, you can walk everywhere or get trams and buses that are frequent along the Danube and there is a “funicular” railway carriage to take you to the top of the castle if you are tired of walking.
All in all Budapest is one of the most beautiful stunning destination in Europe and well worth visiting.
