Germany is one of the largest countries in Europe, there’s plenty to see and do, there are many historical sites to visit, from medieval times to the end of the Cold War. Berlin is particularly well known for sites like the Berlin Wall, the Brandenburg Gate and the Holocaust Memorial. However, there are many major cities in Germany, and travellers in Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, etc… can also expect to see many cultural sites, forests, castles, medieval villages and many festivals such as the Oktoberfest. With a short flight from London, we had the opportunity to visit this country three times in the past few years, we have visited Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen. Our first visit in Germany was in Hamburg in May 2016 for a long weekend, the cousins of my partner are leaving there, so while we were there, they took us around the city, it’s always better to visit a city when there is someone you know living there, they will bring you in hidden beautiful place, that as a tourist you can’t know. Hamburg is a fantastic and very cool city, is one of the best cities for nightlife in Europe but also one of the top cities to both visit and live. It’s becoming the hottest destination in Germany, vibrant and international city, second largest in the country. Whether you’re after a drink or two or a wild night out, Hamburg will not disappoint, St. Pauli is the centre of Hamburg’s bustling nightlife.
With few days in town, you’ve plenty of time to enjoy the city landmarks like the Rathaus, the Lake Alster, St Peter’s Church, the Chilehausn, and the Speicherstadt neighbourhood. On our last day, we spent the afternoon relaxing in the beach of Travemünde Strand, one hour driving north of Hamburg.
In November 2019, we visited Berlin with a couple of friend for a weekend, was quite cold but can’t complaint for November in Germany, if you prefer to visit the country in a warmer weather you should go from May until mid-September like most places in North Europe, in winter time you can find snow almost everywhere, but during Christmas with all the markets the atmosphere is fantastic.
Berlin is the ideal place for a city break in Europe, ticking all the boxes, has the metropolis vibes, good nightlife, amazing local food, a rich history, a lot of beer, and some remarkable sight and museums.
Two days in Berlin certainly isn’t a lot of time, three days would be perfect for this city, we always prefer to visit the cities by foot, but if you don’t love walking, Berlin offers a good variety of public transportation that connects very well the all city. Whether you are backpacking or travelling with a bigger budget, you can find very good accommodations, we booked the Generator Berlin Mitte, just few mins walking distance from the Oranienburger Tor metro station, and we spent less than 20€ per person per night.
Most of the major tourist attractions are all in the city centre, and it makes it easy for people short on time to see the major sights. In your first day you can start from the Brandenburg Gate which has seen a lot of the history of Berlin, for than continue with the Holocaust Memorial, the Reichstag building and the Checkpoint Charlie. For dinner if you like burger I highly suggest to try Burgermeister Schlesisches Tor, excellent burger in an authentic location. For your second day, you can visit the Museum Island, Alexanderplatz and head over to the East Side Gallery in Berlin. For the afternoon you can discover the trendiest Neighborhoods in Berlin of Neukölln, where you find vintage stores, graffiti and a beautiful rooftop bar, Klunkerkranich.
