WHERE TO GO WHEN: MY GUIDE TO THE BEST HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS IN THE WORLD FOR EVERY MONTH OF THE YEAR
WE TRAVELLED ALL AROUND CORNWALL FOR 15 DAYS AND DISCOVERED FANTASTIC PLACES
Spectacular cities, ancient ruins, wonderful museums, wonderful mountains, great beaches, and of course food
A Week Between Palm Trees And Turtles
Mexico has been one of our best and favourite countries that we have visited so far. It is one of those country where you have it all, fantastic beaches, delicious food, cenotes, jungles, lagoons, ancient Mayan cities, ecological reserves, adventure parks, the world’s second largest coral reef and a fantastic warm Mexican welcome. Mexico is one of those countries that you don’t want to leave, and as soon as you do, you miss it already. Like every year we travel somewhere warm in March, in 2017 Mexico was our choice, amazing 10 days spent in a beautiful country in the Yucatan Peninsula. We landed with a direct flight in Cancun from London, we flew with Virgin Atlantic, fantastic service. The best way to travel around the country is definitely hiring a car directly at the airport, we didn’t had any problems driving around and the roads are pretty well maintained.
We booked a hotel for 10 days in Playa del Carmen with a cool pool in the rooftop, and from there we moved around easily going every day in a different destination. If you are planning to stay in the area of Yucatan and Quintana Roo, I highly suggest to find an accommodation around Playa del Carmen, as is the best area to go at night for restaurants and bars. The area of the Riviera Maya, on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, has so much more to offer. Mayan ruins, eco parks, amazing diving spots, they’re all along this 180 km stretch of coastline, which takes you from Cancun to Punta Allen and the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve.
This area was an important commercial and religious center for the ancient Maya, and there are many archaeological sites to discover there, such as Tulum, Cobá, Chichén Itzá and Muyil.
For hundreds of years, the area remained isolated from the rest of the country due to the lack of adequate roads. As Cancun was developed, some tourists wanted an alternative to the big resort area, and the Riviera Maya was re-discovered and developed starting with Playa del Carmen to then in the last few years with Tulum, that is becoming an eco-friendly area with the majority of the infrastructures being eco sustainable. The beaches in this area of Mexico are fantastic, you can spend hours snorkelling and scuba diving, as one of the world’s biggest reefs is just off the coast. Just so you know, at certain times of the year specially in February and March, beaches in Riviera Maya can be impacted by seaweed. This region is also famous for its cenotes, there are plenty of underground rock pools that you can swim in like Gran Cenote, Cenote Azul, Suytun Cenote, Calavera, Tak Be Ha, Yaxbacaltun, Zaci and Ik Kil Cenote are the best.
I have two favourite places in Quintana Roo, the first one is Holbox Island, feels like to be in a different planet, no cars are allowed, everyone is going around with the bike, is the perfect place to relax and recharge, it’s the paradise island. The second one is Tulum, it is a magical little hippie town on the coast, it’s a paradise that everyone will fall in love with, there is not much to do in the town (apart visiting the ruins), but you’ll be spoiled with choices of great food, great music, awesome beach clubs, plenty of restaurants on the beach. Tulum is best explored by bicycle.
Mexican food is one of the most popular foods internationally, but until you are in Mexico you really don’t know what Mexican food is. Everything is delicious and fresh, you will be amazed of the variety of choice, from the best tacos of your life (maybe with your feet in the sand looking at the ocean) to the most juicy chicken. Octopus is something to really not miss, tostada with fish ceviche is unbelievably delicious, breakfast is a big deal and you cannot miss Huevos Rancheros with a fresh good grapefruit juice. Of course there is much much more, that is just the beginning. A couple of great places for breakfast if you are in Playa del Carmen are El Zorro Plateado and La Cueva del Chango, while for dinner I highly suggest Trujillos Cantina De Selva. If you are a beer lover, especially beer by the beach lover, Mexico is your place, they have many local breweries and they all taste amazing, my favourites are Victoria, of course Corona, Pacifico, Modelo and Tecate.
Tulum
The atmosphere and the vibes that we found in this little hippie town, we never saw it anywhere else we travelled to. Tulum is a perfect place for relaxation, vacation and to reconnect with nature. There are plenty of eco-friendly hotels with a sustainability mindset on the beach, they are not cheap but they are amazing. Here you can enjoy the organic meals, tropical vibes, yoga retreat, and is home of well preserved ruins and beautiful white sandy beaches.
Playa del Carmen
The best and trendiest town of the Riviera Maya, and you’re going to love it… everyone does. It’s beautiful, vacation paradise 45 minutes down the coast from the crowded Cancun. Playa del Carmen is known mainly for white sandy beaches, turquoise waters and for its vibe. Not too long ago it was a fishing village but has now become the #1 destination in Mexico.
Holbox Island
We spent a full day in this paradise, if we knew it before that was so beautiful, we would slept in the island for a night. Just 30 minutes boat ride from the town of Chiquilá; the streets of Holbox Island are made of white sand and everyone is going around with golf cart or bicycles as no cars are allowed in the island.
Cenote Azul
A Beautiful stop close to playa del Carmen, was our first cenote visit, and was excellet. We travelled here early morning to avoid the crowds, the water was clear and fresh, it’s quite rocky in some parts of the cenote so I suggest to bring water shoes.
Bacalar Lagoon
The lake of Bacalar is one of the most stunning spots in the Riviera Maya, you can do a daily visit as is around 2 hours driving from Tulum or you could spend a night in the town, there is an amazing hotel with rooms on the water.
Chichén Itzá
If you are in the Yucatan Peninsula, a visit to one of the Seven Wonders of the World can’t be missed. Around two hours driving from Playa del Carmen, the archaeological site is impressive and spectacular, so leave an half day for the visit. Would recommend to go with a guide, as the place is huge and even though most people come to see the triangular famous building, there are lots more to explore and see and you will miss it without a guide.
Valladolid
A small, colourful, and charming colonial town right in the heart of the peninsula. It’s a good base to explore some of the best cenotes in the area and Chichén Itzá or can be a daily visit. The most iconic site of the town is the cathedral of San Gervasio and the rainbow little street at Calzada de Los Frailes that are probably the most picturesque streets in town.
Río Lagartos
Join a boat tour from the fishing village of Rio Lagartos, you will see beautiful pink flamingos and other bird species and the Las Coloradas pink lake. Flamingo season in Rio Lagartos is from March to June, since spring and early summer are breeding season. Flamingos are present all year, but expect to see significantly more during this time.
Merida
If you are looking to take a break from the beaches and the more touristic areas, Merida is the place to go, the capital of Yucatán it’s a great place to explore, with narrow streets and colonial architecture. The Plaza Grandem will be one of your first stops in the historical centre.
Cenote Ik Kil
After the visit of Chichén Itzá, enjoy a swim in the spectacular Cenote Ik Kil, it’s just a five minutes drive. It was such an amazing experience to see the cenote from above and then climb down 26 meter to the water level. Out of the cenotes we have seen, it is the most spectacular one.

Cobá
Just outside of Tulum, the Mayan archaeological site of Cobá contains several pyramids and ruins, the view of the jungle is amazing
Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres is a small island off the coast of Cancun and can be easily explored on a day trip by boat, the colour of the water is really fantastic
The Pyramid of the Sun
Teotihuacan is a large and important archaeological site outside of Mexico City, famous for its Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon
Agua Azul
Agua Azul is a breath-taking sight, with its powerful white waterfalls thundering into turquoise pools surrounded by jungle, located in the Xanil River in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas
