From Elegant Islands And Coastal Towns To Dreamy Parks And Sleepy Medieval Villages
We had a short break from the winter in Europe & wanted to explore somewhere totally new, we stayed in this beautiful Island for seven nights. Landed in the airport of Bridgetown, with a direct flight from London, from there we got a private 8 seater mini van and drove down to our accommodation in the area of Oistins, on the South-West side of the Island. This was a last minute change of plans, originally we were headed to Thailand, but at the end of January 2020 when Covid-19 was sadly disrupting Asia, we had to cancel the trip (well, it’s only postponed, we will go to Thailand). So we only had booked and organised the trip three weeks before the departure date, we were very lucky to find a very good deal with the flight and a very nice three bed house close to the beach.
My first suggestion for the Barbados would be to have an idea of what kind of accommodation and budget you have, in the west coast you can find luxury resorts, while in the south coast you can get very nice private houses or flats at a good price.
With dramatic limestone cliffs, staggering rock formations and high waves, the un-crowded beaches look very different in the east coast of the Island, famous among surfers is the area of Bathsheba.
If you are staying in the area of Oistins, I highly recommend to go and eat in the Fish Market, is the best street food market you will find in the area, the typical meal is a local fish like Mahi Mahi or Flying fish with 3 different salads for 12£, we ended up eating there 4 times that week, the food is just unbelievably tasty and fresh, the atmosphere is relaxed and vibrant at the same time. During the week you can enjoy a meal and a beer with some music on the back ground as only some food stalls open, the weekend is a game changer, all the stalls come to life, two different music venues and many hand crafted gifts to purchase. It becomes very busy but is so much worth it, the vibe is unbelievable but of course, because they are very busy the food may not be as good as during the week, where the chefs have time to prepare it on demand.. so just go two times if you can, one on a week night and one on a Friday.
My favourite part of the Island is Brownes beach in Carlisle Bay, is the best spot to see huge turtles, rays and starfish. You can join a tour of 2 hours organized by the locals on the beach or if you don’t mind to swim for a while you can easily reach the best spot from the beach by yourself. I took so many pics and videos of the turtles, they are fantastic creature.
On the west side of the island you have many many beautiful white sandy beaches where you can spend a relaxing day, Paynes beach, Brighton beach, Mullins beach, every stop that you will make in this Island will be a beautiful beach. In those beaches you can see the best sunset of the Island.
In the north part of the island, you can explore a plantation house and estate, St Nicholas Abbey you can tour the atmospheric ground-floor rooms of one of the Caribbean’s few surviving Jacobean houses, which dates from 1658. The estate has a rum distillery and a museum. Still in the north you can find the Animal Flower Cave, this amazing cave opens directly into the Atlantic Ocean and is the island’s lone accessible sea cave. On calm days you can swim in the natural rock pools in the cave.
Bajan are amazing people, very friendly and very welcoming, you can really feel the love and pride they have for their beaches, it’s amazing to see how much they care about nature and how clean they try to keep the beaches and the water. It helps the turtles!
P.S. When you go remember to bring a waterproof camera for the turtles😀

Animal Flower Cave
Located in the North Point of the Island, inside the cave you will find some sea anemones, which are locally called animal flowers, hence the name of the cav
Oistins Fish Market
If you are around the area of Oistins, you need to stop for dinner in the best street food market of the Island, you must try the Mahi Mahi and Flying fish. The best day is Friday night, full of locals, tourists and music. The best vibe and food. Weekdays are more quiet and not as busy, but still nice vibe
St Nicholas Abbey
Visit the old sugarcane estate plantation house, museum and rum distillery in the north-east part of the island
Bathsheba
On the East coast, Bathsheba is a spectacular contrast to the west coast, fishing villages area, it's a perfect spot for surfer. This isn't somewhere you would want to swim, but after spending days relaxing on a beach on the west coast, it's a spectacular reminder of the power of the Atlantic
