WHERE TO GO WHEN: MY GUIDE TO THE BEST HOLIDAY DESTINATIONS IN THE WORLD FOR EVERY MONTH OF THE YEAR
WE TRAVELLED ALL AROUND CORNWALL FOR 15 DAYS AND DISCOVERED FANTASTIC PLACES
Spectacular cities, ancient ruins, wonderful museums, wonderful mountains, great beaches, and of course food
A Week Between Palm Trees And Turtles
Few cities around the world are blessed with over 250 sunny days per year, one of them is Miami. Miami is one of South Florida’s premier vacation destinations, with beaches, history, culture, sports, and entertainment. From the museums to the streets of Little Havana and Little Haiti, you can always find plenty of things to do. Across the bay, Miami Beach, with it’s Art Deco District, fantastic beachfront, and fun vibes, is the best place to visit.
Downtown Miami is connected with Miami Beach by a series of bridges, the north part of the island is a mix of quiet neighbourhoods, and long stretches of sandy beaches while South Beach and the Art Deco Historic District is where you have the main activity hubs with numerous beachfront restaurants, shops, hotels. The most popular streets are Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive that is the main oceanfront street in Miami Beach.
We visited Miami just for 4 days in our way back to Europe after our Mexican holiday, we stayed in two really cool hotels in South Beach, the South Beach Plaza Villas and the Stiles hotel in Collins Ave, just few minutes walking from the beach.
The architectural style, popular in the 1930s and 40s, dominates the trendy South Beach neighbourhood, these unique designed buildings with pastel colours, were built following a devastating hurricane in 1926, many are hotels and restaurants that have been beautifully restored.
South Beach is the most popular beach in Miami and one of the top beaches in Florida, it’s often packed in summer and during the golden hours of the sunset, that is when the best part of the day begins for Miami’s party people, it’s a place to see and enjoy.
Other cool districts to visit are Little Haiti and Little Havana in Downtown Miami, the Cuban district of Miami, where you can enjoy the Latin music and delicious food in the many restaurants that you find in the tiny streets. If you are in the area in March, The Calle Ocho Festival, is a celebration of Cuban culture and the largest of its kind in the world and you can’t miss it.
If you are a basketball fan, you need to visit The American Airlines Arena, and if you are lucky, you can watch a game of the Miami Heat. It is also the main venue for large concerts and other special events, including top name singers and performers, and can hold more than 19,000 people, really cool atmosphere, we manage to find the tickets for a game in the few days we were here.
Wynwood Walls is one of the most famous gallery of the city, you have probably seen plenty of pictures in the social media, in this outdoor gallery you will see colourful pieces of art, graffiti and paintings in a unique art form, this can be a quick stop, you will need around 30 minutes.
Outside the city, a cool activity that you can do is visit the Everglades National Park, known for its unique ecosystem and wildlife, we didn’t have enough time to do it, but if you have, will be a thrilling experience, riding around the Everglades on an airboat, and you will discover few creatures that are living there like alligators, turtles, etc.
We visited the Keys, one of America’s most unique motor journeys, from Downtown Miami is a beautiful scenic 160 mile long with ocean views, and you will cross around 40 bridges until the last island Key West. It’s a really nice and cool journey, driving through so many little villages and each island of the Keys has its one own unique character, you will cross Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine Key & the Lower Keys with the final stop in Key West.
Key West is the southernmost point in the United States and it’s just 90 miles from Cuba! The beaches, the vibes, and the sunset are fantastic. Mallory Square is in the heart of Key West, it’s were you will find hundreds of people watching the sunset, street performers and musicians on the streets. If you are looking for a snack or a sandwich, I highly recommend to go to Cuban Coffee Queen in Margaret St, the Cuban sandwiches are delicious. We spent half day in Smathers Beach, one of the best beaches of the keys, the water is very clear, and you can do so many water sport activities. We also stayed at the Edgewater lodge in the Layton Key in our way back to Miami, a really nice and relaxing lodge with ocean views. For sure you need more than 4 days to really enjoy the city and the many activities it offers, but those days were just enough to get a good feeling of it.
